Travel Apps for 2015
I spent 10 weeks this Fall traveling all over the UK and I’m still convinced that the iPhone is one of the best tools a traveler can use. Previously, I talked about other apps that I always use for travel because they make travel so easy and seamless. Here are some of my new favorite travel apps that I have discovered in my recent travels.
Citymapper App
I’ve used this app recently in London and Paris and it the best when it comes to making the decision of choosing between a bus, metro or walking. There are several key features like allowing you to save your favorite sights and create a home base (like your hotel). For any route, this app will give you the quickest way to get from point A to B without making a fuss. Citymapper is very easy to navigate with a clean interface.
Pocket Earth
In the old days, I used to take screen shots of Google Maps when I was connected to the internet in order to use them offline. With Pocket Earth, you can download several maps for anywhere in the world and use them off line. Travelers can also pre-plan routes ahead of time. This is a great app if you are trying to use maps while offline or without data. This app also interfaces with Wikipedia, allowing travelers to research sights and nearby attractions.
Google Translate
This is an oldie but a goodie that keeps getting better and better. Several key features make this a go-to travel app for anyone on the road. Google Translate allows you to save your favorite phrases and store them. This is great so you can practice key phrases in order to help with communication and avoid the “Ugly American” stereotype. This powerful translation app is now updated with voice recognition and Word Lens. These new features allow you to get your translation from either speaking into your phone or by simply scanning in foreign phrases or words. How cool is that? Word Lens has a great tutorial before you use it for the first time and can also be used offline (without internet or data connection).
